Terre Haute offers a strong culture of health and wellness.  With more than 8,300 health and wellness workers across the county and a $46.1 million annual payroll, the industry has a compelling impact.   We are home to top medical facilities as well as affordable health care costs.  From such companies as HCA-Terre Haute Regional Hospital, the Union Health System, and Hamilton Center (a regional behavioral health system), we are a healthcare hub with expanding medical and wellness tourism opportunities.

Both the HCA-Terre Haute Regional Hospital and Union Hospital are Level 3 Trauma Centers.  Union Health System's NICU (a Level 3 unit) is the largest in a 70-mile radius and was the first NICU established in the state.

Terre Haute is home to respected medical schools that produce leading medical professionals who serve patients across the region, state and nation.  These include Indiana State University College of Health and Human Services; Ivy Tech Community College Nursing & Practical Nursing program; Saint Mary of the Woods College Nursing Program; and the Rural Health Innovation Collaborative.  (The latter works to improve and expand interprofessional education, training, and deployment of future health care providers, especially for those committed to serving rural population.)  We would be remiss not to mention the Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health that takes an innovative approach to prepare and train medical residents for successful rural practice.

Terre Haute's health and wellness industry includes a dynamic and growing group of companies that provide preventive, curative and rehabilitative services as well.  Extending beyond health care delivery, the industry represents a continuum of businesses ranging from treating disease to a multidimensional and holistic approach that focuses on complete physical and mental health, social well-being, and disease prevention.  Companies in the health and wellness industry includes the offices of physicians, dentists, chiropractors, optometrists, physical and speech therapists and other health practitioners.  The Industry includes hospitals ranging from general medical, surgical and psychiatric to substance abuse and specialty care, and includes centers focused on family planning, outpatient, substance abuse, kidney dialysis, diagnostic imaging and emergency care.  Companies focused on nursing care, assisted living and long-term care, and businesses that provide services for individuals, families and the elderly are also included.  From Industries of home health equipment rental, fitness and recreational facilities, diet and weight reducing services, and massage and yoga services, to companies that manufacture opthalmic goods, and retailers engaged in vitamins and nutrition supplements are also included.

From pre-K to our colleges and universities, Terre Haute is high in educational rankings.  Our Vigo County Public School Corporation works to equip students with lifelong learning skills, and in response to the growing skills gap, one of the most strategic options created is the school's Career & Technical Education (CTE) program.  Through CTE, students are given the opportunity to learn the occupational skills they need to enter today's technical workforce.

Access to top tier universities and programs is another reason why brillant minds choose Terre Haute, Indiana.  We have 4 colleges and universities among which include Indiana State University which draws students from all over the world.  Renowned private schools such as Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College call Terre Haute home.  And Ivy Tech Community College is widely regarded as offering some of the most comprehensive and advanced vocational and technical programs in the U.S.   All are magnets for top talented students.  Add our 265 days of sunshine and ability to head to the trails or the river for a much needed break from studying, it's easy to see why students make their roots here - eventually becoming your valued employees.

Want to know a secret?  Contrary to popular belief, Indiana isn't all snowy winters and hot summers. We have four seasons that get us outside and energize us to pursue the best in a day.   With over 265 days of sunshine, backyard BBQ's, river activities, and outdoor sport indulgences are enjoyed.

We are one of several Indiana Counties that's within an "attainment area" - meaning we meet all federal clean-air standards.  We have few weather related interruptions of business operations.  And, we take environmental stewardship seriously by way of the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area - 7,000 acres along the Wabash River which is part of Governor Holcomb's Healthy River initiative.

The Police and Fire-Rescue departments work together within our communities to provide the highest level of quality service and protection.  From neighborhood watch to 9-1-1 services, our teams are here for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The City of Terre Haute is governed by a full-time mayor who is the chief administrative official of the city, and a nine-member city council.  Vigo County is governed by three county commissioners and a seven-member county council whose responsibilities lie primarily in the area of fiscal affairs.
