Indiana’s three-ports are located in the northwest and southern corners of the state. More than half of state's border is water which includes 400 miles of direct access to two major freight transportation arteries — the Great Lakes/ST. Lawrence Seaway and the Ohio-Mississippi inland river system.
The three port facilities operated by the Ports of Indiana are located in Burns Harbor/Portage on Lake Michigan as well as Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon, both on the Ohio River. Major cargoes at the Ports of Indiana include: grain, coal, steel, limestone, fertilizer, minerals, salt and project cargo. The three Indiana Ports are accessible by rail to/from Terre Haute, Indiana.
The State of Indiana ships 71 millions tons of cargo by water each year, ranking Indiana 14th among all states in waterborne shipping. Terre Haute is within equidistance of all three ports, approximately 120 miles.
